Transporting a cat: What you should pay attention to for its safety & which bag to choose

All cat parents know this well. Transporting the cat is not the easiest thing in the world. Cats bond with their space and don't want change, so it's not uncommon for them to disappear when they see the carrier bag and we're looking for them all over the house!

However, with the right moves you can make your kitty feel more comfortable in every transport, whether it's something short or a whole trip, and of course she's completely safe. Read everything you need to know below.

How to choose the right cat carrier bag?

The first step is to choose the type of bag according to the character of your cat and the type of transport:

  • Transport crate : This is the safest way of transport, since the box/crate is hard on all sides. Plus, it won't get damaged or torn by cat claws.

  • Carrying bag : The carrying bag has a similar design to the cage, i.e. it is closed on all sides, while the front or perimeter has a net for sufficient ventilation. Its difference is that it is soft, so it provides a feeling of warmth to the kitty.

  • Pouch/backpack : These are bags that are placed in front or behind our body and allow the cat's head to come out, so it doesn't feel trapped. It is only recommended if the cat is very familiar with the transport and is not stressed or trying to get away.

From there, once you have decided on the type of transport, it is good to pay attention to the following:

  • Size: The kitten should be able to turn around comfortably in the cage/bag. However, the bag should not be too big either, because then it will not give it the desired sense of security.

  • Waterproof: Cat transport boxes/cages are naturally waterproof, but the bag should be as well. And this is because the kitty may vomit or defecate in the bag out of fear.

  • Durable and safe: Check that the bag closes firmly or has a restriction valve and has no points that could open and the cat could escape in its panic.

Easy Cat Transport Tips

Knowing that you have chosen the right means of transport for your kitty, the next step is to see how you can make her feel more comfortable. Based on our experience we have come to the following:

  • Familiarization : Leave the bag in a visible place at home days before the transfer. Your kitty will have time to explore it, so it won't cause her anxiety as something new. You can also put some treats inside, so that she can associate it with something positive.

  • Preparation : It is good that the cat has not eaten anything a few hours before the transport, so that it does not become dizzy and vomits. So, after ruling out this possibility, you can lay her favorite blanket inside the bag or cage, so that she feels familiar.

  • Cuddle and fit : Few cats fit easily into the bag. The simplest way for even the most anxious kitty is to hug her and wrap her in her blanket so she can't make sudden movements. The cage or bag should be placed vertically so that the door faces upwards. Then you'll just gently let the cat end up inside with the force of gravity.

  • Feeling safe : Make your cat feel less anxious during transport by putting a sheet over the bag. So, he won't have many stimuli and will quiet down quite quickly in the dark.
